Edmond Wheeler Pottle was born on January 20, 1927 in Chicago to Elijah and Olive Pottle, and died on September 13, 2022 surrounded by family. Ed married the love of his life Veta Babendererde on September 11, 1954 and had five children who loved him dearly; Edmond (Cathy) Pottle, Steve Pottle, Joan (Russ) Prince, Susan (Mark Henderson) Avicola, and Jeff (Laura) Pottle. He was overjoyed to have 11 grandchildren; Melanie (Andrew) Kuecker, Daniel Avicola, Kristen (David) Gregory, Russell Prince Jr., Sarah, Jacob and Sean Pottle, and Cal (Lisa) Kennemer. He was always saying how blessed he was to have his 12 great-grandchildren as well; Lorelai, Olive and Jensen Kuecker, Zayden and Sylas Avicola, Ryker, Scarlett, Jett and Malachi Gregory, and Jacob, Joshua and Avery Kennemer.
After joining the navy in 1944, Ed went to sea on an LST and also a Command and Control Ship in the Pacific. He was discharged in 1946.
Edmond loved telling the story of how he met Veta, boasting how glad he was he stopped for a beer at that tavern and chatted up the young lady behind counter doing her homework. Their love was one for the storybooks, envied by all who knew the couple or even those who were blessed to hear the many stories Ed would tell.
Ed raised his 5 children with Veta at 522 Rose Avenue in Addison. He was proud of the home they built together, working on his basement project, gardening, and building life long friends with his many neighbors. Everyone to this day still talks of their unforgettable Christmas Eve parties.
In his later years Ed enjoyed golfing, visiting the range to hit a bucket of balls, and growing tomatoes, peppers, and flowers in the community garden he kept up for years. Especially the zinnias he planted for his wife each year, and sharing his crop with friends and strangers alike. Ed loved going to his grandchildren's sporting events and dance recitals. Family was everything.
His family will miss his wonderful story telling. Whether it was of his childhood farm in Batavia where he lived with his 4 siblings; Foster (Joan) Pottle, Beulah Sullivan Ryan, Joy Pottle and Alan (Millie) Pottle, spending long hours driving his truck for HF Vegter for over 30 years, long car rides with 5 kids in the back seat of one car, or the many memories he had of his love and life he shared with Veta, everyone was all ears.
Ed was the rock of his family. The glue that held everyone together. He will never be forgotten. We are all so glad that he stopped for that beer.
