Dorothea (Dorothy) Marie Witthoff (nee Balcom), age 73, of Hanover Park, IL, passed away peacefully on January 15, 2023, at West Suburban Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Bloomingdale, IL. She had been a resident at the facility for 11 years. Dorothy was the first of 6 daughters born to John and Marian Balcom (nee Bryant) on March 7, 1949.
Dorothy is survived by her husband of 41 years, Anthony Kierna, son Russell Witthoff (Ana Marta Vargas), daughter Heather Witthoff and grandchildren Eileen Witthoff, Aidan Witthoff, Simone Duha and niece, Lauren Spears.
Additionally, she is survived by her sisters Kathleen Vincek (Albert), Eileen Balcom-Vetillo, Patricia O’Brien (Neil) and Ann Spears (Timothy). She is predeceased by another sister, Mary Layco and brother-in-law Michael Balcom-Vetillo.
Dorothy grew up in the Austin area of Chicago. She attended St. Angela Grammar School, Mother Theodore Guerin High School in River Grove, IL, and graduated with an RN degree from Mayfair Junior College in Chicago.
With her professional Registered Nurse degree in hand, she went on to become a Labor and Delivery Nurse at both MacNeal Memorial Hospital in Berwyn, IL and at Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield, IL. Subsequently, Dorothy became employed as an agency nurse with Melmedica Children’s Health Care in Chicago, IL that focused on pediatric home health care services. She always enjoyed working the 3rd shift while with the company. Dorothy was an incredibly strong advocate for all her patients throughout her entire career in nursing.
Dorothy, being the ever so considerate medical person that she was, did direct years before her illness that her remains be donated to science for the benefit of other medical students and researchers. Her wishes were fulfilled and her remains were donated to the Anatomical Gift Association of Chicago, IL.
A memorial visitation in her honor will be held on Sunday, June 30, 2024 from 3:00pm - 8:00pm at Countryside Funeral Home 950 South Bartlett Road (at Stearns Road), Bartlett, IL. A celebratory Mass will take place the next morning on Monday, July 1, 2024, 10:45 at St. Isidore Catholic Church at 427 W Army Trail Rd, Bloomingdale, IL 60108.
