Donald E Johnson, born on May 3, 1934, died on June 8, 2020. Don was the loving father of LeeAnn (Patrick) Conlon, Teri Sue Johnson, Jill (Steve) Echternach, Jennifer Hoeft and Erika (Ed) Dobrotka, cherished grandfather of Christopher (Julie Bierzychudek) Echternach, Stephanie (Russ) Woodyard, Steven (Jordan) Hoeft, Eric (Jayme) Hoeft and Cameron Dobrotka. Great-grandfather of Wyatt, Ryan, Madison & Olivia Hoeft and Evelyn Woodyard. Dear brother of James (Carol) Johnson. Uncle to Kevin, Keith, Kristine, Jeff & Kathy. Former husband of Carol Johnson.
For over 40 years, Don was a mechanical engineer with a specialty in fire protection. In his later years he was a mentor to many younger engineers. Some of his proudest accomplishments were his work on Marina Towers, the State of Illinois Building (formerly the Thompson Center) and nuclear power plants in France and Korea. He was a founding member of the Chicago Chapter of the American Society of Plumbing Engineers, maintaining his membership for 50 years, and a former Village of Barrington Trustee. He will be remembered as an avid Chicago sports fan as a Bears season ticket holder and his love for the Chicago Cubs and the Blackhawks. He himself played 16-inch softball in the Men’s Grant Park League through his mid-sixties. He loved all things water – the YMCA, swimming and boating, and teaching each of his daughters to water ski at an early age.
