Demetra Matsas (nee Tamvakis), 80, of Elmhurst and Florida, passed away Tuesday, February 14, 2023 surrounded by her family.
Demetra was born January 1st, 1943 in Thessaloniki, Greece. She was the younger daughter of Efstratios and Eleni Tamvakis. Demetra emigrated to Chicago in 1960 where her sister and brother-in-law lived and had met Dean K. shortly thereafter. They've been married for over 60 years. Demetra was a devoted mother to her children, as well as a devout Yia Yia to her grandchildren. Her husband and she enjoyed splitting their time between Elmhurst, Florida, and Greece throughout the years. Demetra will be remembered and missed for her authentic Greek dishes as well as her infectious laugh. She always laughed with her heart.
Demetra was the beloved wife of the late Dean K.; loving mother of Constantine (Marie), Efstratios "Strat", Efthimia "Effie" (Anthony) Quaranta, Helen Brewer, and the late Efthimia Matsas; proud Yiayia of Michael, John Dean, Scott, Graham, James, Finley, Nicholas, Andrew, Stefanie, Christopher, Timothy, Anthony, Niko, Mia, Antonia, and Charlie; dear sister of the late Chrisoula (the late Michael) Kintonis; fond aunt of many nieces and nephews.
Visitation Thursday, February 23 from 10:00am until time of service 11:00am at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church 893 Church Rd., Elmhurst. Interment Elmwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials to the Alzheimer's Association at www.alz.org are appreciated. Info (630)289-7575
