Daniel J. “Dan” Thiel, 58, of Lake in the Hills, died Saturday, November 13, 2021 in Hoffman Estates after a brave battle with brain cancer. Dan was born June 17, 1963 in Chicago, and lived there until the family relocated to Northbrook, where he spent most of his childhood and adolescent years. After retiring from the printing industry, he spent the last several years owning and operating a candy store, which he loved. Dan enjoyed cooking and was an excellent home cook who was known to make many meals for coworkers, friends, family, and neighbors over the years. He even made meals on holidays for his buddies he knew from local stores and gas stations that were working and couldn’t be with their families. He enjoyed history and loved collecting antiques with his brother, and liked to spend weekends at antique shows in the area. Dan was a talker and could strike up a conversation with anyone about anything. Dan could make anyone laugh with his quick wit and sarcasm until they had tears in their eyes, and he most certainly passed that trait down to his three wonderful children. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family and was the life of any party or gathering. Beloved dad of Hayley (Jason) McClain, Christian Thiel and Madison (Bradley) McCoy; loving Opa of Teddy and Matilda; cherished son of the late Norman and Anna Hasch; dear brother of Anita (the late Randy) Ruesch, Annette (Jay) Tanel, twin David (Julie) Thiel, Tony (Maria) Thiel and Michael (Erika) Hasch; kind uncle to many nieces and nephews and a wonderful friend to anyone who crossed his path.
