Christopher Edward “Chris” Van Herik passed away unexpectedly on Sunday evening, March 29.
Chris has spent a number of years in community service, volunteering with many organizations and projects.
He served as vice president of the Hanover Township affiliate of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). Among many posts he held, he was Treasurer of the NAMI Illinois Consumer Council, and served on a number of projects.
He was a counselor for Northwest Suburban Recreational Council (NWSRA), and coached teams for Special Olympics. He was active with Streamwood Jaycees, and was voted Streamwood’s Volunteer of the Year in 2002.
He was a student of legislative action in his efforts to obtain justice and needed supports for the millions in recovery from a serious mental illness. He engaged local, state and national legislators in his advocacy efforts.
Most of his days, Chris had to struggle to be seen as the strong, hard-working, dependable person he strove to be. Far too often the label preceded him, and the decision was made before he arrived. Sometimes, an employer understood and appreciated what he had to offer, and things worked out well for the both of them.
His daily battle against his condition would have defeated a lesser man. Instead he was a dedicated, sincere and civilized contributor to the common good, and he will be deeply missed.
