Choy Ping was born on Aug 2, 1920, in Canton, China. She married Ser Jew Dai in 1937, and they immigrated to Chicago in 1949. Like many immigrants, they came to America seeking economic opportunities and a better life for their family. They opened up a dry cleaning and laundry business, which was common for Chinese immigrants at that time. They then opened a very successful Chinese food take-out restaurant, the first in the Schaumburg area outside of Chicago. While very skilled in business and accounting, what Choy Ping enjoyed most was cooking and spending time with her family. She often spent entire weekends preparing dumplings and Cantonese-style joongs (bamboo leaves stuffed with sticky rice, Chinese sausage, and peanuts) for her sons’ families. She was also never short of friends. Working hard to put all three of her sons through college and rarely taking a vacation, she thoroughly enjoyed a night out playing

with good friends.
Choy Ping was a gregarious and generous person who loved her family and friends. In her later years, she wholly embraced her role as not only a devoted mother but also a dedicated and loving grandmother and great-grandmother, and was fondly referred to as "MaMa." She was perceptive and had a sharp memory even until her final years. Our family will keep her in our minds forever and never forget she was such a caring and loving person.
