Bernard Louis Johnson of Streamwood; died Jan. 4, 2011, at home surrounded by family and friends. "Bud," as he was known by friends, was born in Chicago, Nov. 25, 1917, to his parents, Louis and Hattie Johnson. He was the younger brother of Jenola. On Aug. 2, 1941, he married Lorraine and they enjoyed 40 years together before her death in 1982.
He was a veteran of World War II and served with distinction in the 5th Army in North Africa and the European Theater throughout Sicily and Italy. Following his discharge at war's end, he was employed by United Airlines, retiring in 1980, after 35 years of service. He enjoyed playing the drums and listening to music. He liked to spend time fishing, boating and working on automobiles. He liked to travel and spend time in the company of friends and family. He was a generous man, proud of his family and graced with a grand sense of humor.
He leaves behind his son, Dale (Sandy) Johnson; daughter, Susan (Charles) Meier; youngest son, Larry Johnson; and grandchildren, Dale Jr., Kim, Lisa, Scott and Cheri and their families. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of service at noon Saturday, at Countryside Funeral Home and Crematory, 1640 Greenmeadows Blvd. (at Barrington Road), Streamwood/Schaumburg. He will be laid to rest in a private ceremony at Barrington Center Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of one's choice.
