Dear Family and Friends
It’s with a heavy heart and tears in my eyes I share with you that my beautiful 26-year-old son, Austin, and brother to Alex, Riley and the late Ryan, died last night surrounded by his family wrapped in love as he made his journey to heaven.
Austin had the most remarkable, though short life. At birth he had a 1% chance of survival. He proved to the doctors that he was a force to be reckoned with. He had his first kidney transplant at age 16 months and I was honored to be his donor. His second kidney transplant was at age 17 when his angel on earth and friend Cherish Walsh donated life to him. At age 20, he developed a rare cancer -post transplant lymphoma and beat the odds. In July of 2021 Austin went into kidney failure again. In August 2022 he developed a very rare bacterial infection forcing us to remove both donor kidneys. The bacteria also infected his lungs which he had two lung surgeries to repair the damage. In January 2023 his liver started to give out. He has been fighting one infection after another infection to no avail and even though his soul and spirit were strong, his body just could not continue.
Austin’s life adventures were many – he was a representative for the PDK foundation for ARPKD (infantile PKD), He served as a Child of Hope for Lurie’s Children Hospital, he swam competitively for 10 years on the Hanover Park Sailfish, he was an extra in the movie Divergent, he was an Eagle Scout and a member of the Order of the Arrow Brotherhood, at 20 he saved a man’s life because of his CPR skills, a lifeguard and a career as EMT. He loved theater and musicals, knew sign language, taught Religious Education, served as an usher at St John’s the Evangelist and an avid volunteer for many organizations. I could continue an endless list of accomplishments and activities but people close already know that.
He is now being embraced by his dad and brother in heaven. I am honored and privileged to be able to say I am his Mom.
Austin’s Mom forever
Diane
