Amiya Prasad Sen, 75, passed away October 3, 2021. Amiya was the beloved father of Jayati (Thomas Ehrich) Sen and Amrita (Daniel Cothran) Sen; proud grandfather of Sophia and Kiran; cherished son of the late Jati Prasad and Biraj Mohini Sen; preceded in death by five siblings, Sheila, Shankar, Chitra, Roma, and Debo.
Amiya Prasad Sen was born on November 7, 1945, in Kanpur, India. He graduated from Ballygunge Government High School in Kolkata. He then attended the Indian Institute of Technology in Kharagpur, graduating with a degree in civil engineering. Following projects in England, Ireland, and Canada, Amiya returned to India and married Bidya Sengupta in 1975. The couple lived in New Delhi, where they welcomed their first child, Jayati, in 1977.
Amiya emigrated to the United States in 1979, and he was joined by Bidya and Jayati a few months later. The family welcomed their second child, Amrita in 1986. Following engineering projects in Mississippi, Texas, California, Michigan, and Chicago, the family settled in Columbus, Ohio, where Amiya was a structural engineer at American Electric Power.
From 2014, Amiya enjoyed an active retirement, visiting childhood and university friends around the United States, and spending time with family in West Bengal and Australia. In 2016, Amiya relocated his home base from Columbus to Elmhurst, Illinois, in order to be closer to his daughters and grandchildren when not traveling. A voracious reader, Amiya regaled his daughters and sons-in-law with conversations ranging from history to politics to books and movies. A doting grandparent, he had endless patience for coloring pictures, providing math lessons, or just listening.
Visitation Thursday, October 7, 11:00am until the time of cremation 1:00pm at Countryside Funeral Home and Crematory 950 South Bartlett Road (at Stearns Road) Bartlett. Following services cremation will take place at Countryside Crematory. In lieu of flowers, the family is suggesting memorial contributions in Amiya’s name be made to St. Jude’s hospital.
