Alvin Amos was born on Thursday, March 22, 1945 at home in Florence, MS, and passed away with his family present on December 3, 2024 in Hoffman Estates, IL. Alvin was the son of Mack and Mary (Lewis) Amos. He was the sixth of seven siblings; four have preceded him in death: Bernice (Ernest*) Harden, Mackie Ruth (Erie*) Stamps, Lynne Dell (Ance*) McLaurin and MacArthur (Ruth) Amos. Alvin's is survived by sisters Rita Walker and Pamela (Rosevelt*) Jackson.
Alvin enjoyed his childhood in Mississippi. He accepted Christ at a young age at Brown Hill Missionary Baptist Church. He loved sharing tales of how his elementary school, Spring Hill Elementary, was attached to the church and everybody was in the same room, same grade, and same teacher from kindergarten to ninth grade; that in first grade he knew just as much as the ninth grader.
He attended and graduated from McLaurin High School, the class of 1963. He maintained those childhood friendships and the reminiscences he loved.
Alvin loved his family. He knew his home was his blessing, but that Mississippi heat was not his friend. Shortly after graduation he kissed his baby sister Pam goodbye and left for Chicago, Illinois.
Alvin was a great craftsman and could figure out how to fix most anything, and if he broke it, he would say, "Well that's why I work to pay somebody else to do it.".
In Chicago he began making his way and acquired the nickname "The Godfather." He enrolled and attended Bryant & Stratton College, earning certification in Mechanical and Maintenance Engineering. During this time he fathered his oldest daughter, Berneta Moore, with Candace Moore.
Alvin began working at Northwest Cone in Chicago, IL, in 1964. Shortly after, he met and married Marjorie Carolyn Hill (Stewart) in 1966. Marjorie Stewart preceded him in death in 2019. Their union gave them one child, a son, Jeffrey Amos, born August 15, 1967.
Alvin later settled on the South Side of Chicago. During the late summer of 1973, Alvin met Lizzie Strong, his wife until his death, at a mutual friend's Labor Day party. Alvin and Liz began the merger of their families, her three children, Elex Jr., Patricia and Nicole Strong, with his children, Berneta and Jeff, under one roof in 1977, and officially marrying in January of 1998.
Alvin's greatest joy was his family. His children, his grandchildren, his siblings and friends. Together Alvin and Liz blended their families, not perfectly but imperfectly, with love.
Alvin leaves to mourn his loving wife, two sons, three daughters, seventeen grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, one great-granddaughter, Wynter, preceded him in death, and two sisters, a host of nieces, with a special spot for his niece Janice Stamps Studaway, she helped fill the hole left by the loss of her mother, his sister Mackie and a host of nephews, cousins and friends.
