Alice Patricia Kelly (nee Meagher) of Bartlett, Illinois, passed away peacefully at home with her family on August 10, 2021 at the age of 108 years old. Alice was the 5th child, born to Edward Meagher and Margaret Hogan Meagher on December 30, 1912 on the family farm in Rutland Township, Illinois. She was preceded in death by her husband, Philip L. Kelly, her parents, her brothers, Edward, Jr., Pierce (Dorothy), John (Margaret) and Joseph (Barbara) and her sisters, Mary (Harry) Little and Margaret (Charles) Driscoll.
Alice is survived by her son, Michael (Helen) Kelly and five grandchildren, Philip (fiancé Neethu Balan), Mary “Molly” (Matthew) Kelly Bragg, Anne Marie (Noah) Kelly Halpern, John “Jack” and Mary Catherine.
Alice attended a one-room schoolhouse for grade school in Gilberts, Illinois. She graduated from Elgin High School in 1929 where she played on the girl’s basketball team and acted in comedy sketches. She received her teaching certificate from Dekalb Teacher’s College after one year of study and by age 18 was teaching eight grades in a one-room schoolhouse in District 19, Rutland-Gilberts, Illinois. Following the example of her brothers, in 1944 Alice enlisted in the U.S. Army (WACS). She was assigned to Scott Air Force Base 3503 AAF Squad D, in Belleville, Illinois. She served as a physical therapist G72 helping injured combat soldiers and was honorably discharged March 2nd, 1946. After her service to her Country, she returned to teaching and taught for many years in Gilberts and Carpentersville, Illinois.
In 1953 Alice married her loving husband, Philip L. Kelly at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Gilbert’s Illinois. In 1955 Alice and Phil welcomed Michael.
Her great loves were her Catholic Faith, her husband Philip, her parents, brothers and sisters and many nieces and nephews, her son Michael and daughter in law Helen, her Irish heritage, and mostly her grandchildren, Phil, Molly, Anne, Jack, and Mary Catherine, who all were devoted so much to her care and well-being.
She volunteered for many years as a substitute teacher at St. Catherine of Sienna grade school in Dundee, Illinois, St. Catherine Alter and Rosary Society, and the St. Peter Damien When In Need Committee. Alice also loved to sew and donate baby blankets to families in need.
She was blessed with an extraordinary array of friends of all ages for many years. She enjoyed playing cards, watching Lawrence Welk, and most importantly, was a life long fan of her beloved White Sox. She said the Rosary every day of her adult life.
Alice always put others first, she led a complete and beautiful life, and will be missed by many.
